Mission San Jose

Nickname: The Patriarchal Mission, built June 11, 1797, 14th.

Impressions:

"The graveyard was big, and cool to see since not all the missions have big graveyards."

Special Attractions:
  • Great museum! Very big and very informative. Information was presented from both sides of history.
Significant Events:
  • 1868 earthquake destroyed mission church and most of the buildings. Replica structure rebuilt in 1985.
Interesting Facts:
  • During the Gold Rush a store in the west wing outfitted miners.
  • The Ohlone choir, taught by Padre Narciso Duan was famous.
  • Only 13 miles from Mission Santa Clara de Asis
