Mission San Diego de Alcala

Nickname: The Mother of the Missions, July 16th, 1769, 1st mission.

Impressions:

"Really cool archeology still going on. Neat to see the first one." 

Special Attractions:
  • 1st mission in the Alta California system.
  • Mosaic panels for the stations of the cross.
Significant Events:
  • Used by the US Army from 1853 to 1858.
  • Fully restored in 1931.
Interesting Facts:
  • One of the bells weighs 1200 pounds and was recast from fragments from 1895.
  • The crosses in the cemetery are made from the original bricks from the mission.
  • Holds California's 1st church cemetery.
  • The called the people "Diegueno's" as they were associated with Mission San Diego.
