San Raphael de Archangel

Nickname: The Least of the Missions, December 14th, 1817, 20th mission.

Impressions:

"Nothing really to see here. The museum is closed random days. The new church is huge and pink."

Special Attractions:

The old mission walls are still upright, though the original church is completely gone.

Significant Events:
  • In 1846 the Mexican governor Pio Pico ordered the dispersed Indian population to return the mission, and when they didn't, the settlers plundered the place.  Then a US Army Captain, John Fremont, and his guide, Kit Carson, lined the Native Americans up and massacred them.
Interesting Facts:
  • Originally designated a sanitarium for native converts.
  • The only one with no courtyard or plaza.
  • The entire original structure is gone.
