Mission San Francisco de Solano

Nickname: The Last of the Missions, built July 4th, 1823, 21st mission.

Impressions:

"It has the best fountain. It is small, but packed with tons of stuff."

Special Attractions:
  • Northernmost outpost on the Alta California mission trail.
  • Excellent El Camino Real timeline in the museum.
Significant Events:
  • 1840 abandoned, sold in 1880, and was privately operated until it was donated to the state in 1961.
Interesting Facts:
  • Was the only mission established under independent Mexico.
  • The Baja California missions are even older than the Alta California missions. Mision Nuestra Señora de Loreto de Concha was established in 1697.
  • Is currently the only one not held by the Catholic Church.
